Fall 2017 Intern Blog Series: Sustainable Development

Sustainable development is a phrase that you will start to hear more and more frequently. It is a new worldwide challenge that is targeted at improving economic prosperity, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and good governance. Basically, how can we get the Global South on an equal playing field with the rest of the world without further destroying the Earth’s environment? Political scientists and economists are quickly trying to come up with solutions to this question. The first step is to identify the reasons that some countries remain behind in development, and the next step is to take action in order to change a country’s fate. It is not a simple solution by any means, but with a lot of research, it can be done in many ways. One such way that sustainable development can be better achieved is through projects like GOL’s current venture of building the school in Senegal. This school will not only aid in social inclusion but also in economic prosperity. Education is key to upward mobility for children. This school will allow many more children to attend school safely, which will give them a better chance of economic prosperity in their future. It also helps social inclusion because it gives the children in Senegal more of an opportunity to attain education, so they are not completely left behind by children in other parts of Africa and around the world. Non-profits like GOL can make huge differences in sustainable development in the Global South, and the school that will be built is a perfect example of this. Jacy]]>
